Rowanwood Music

Lovibond May Rowanwood is a Devon-rooted singer-songwriter whose music moves through folk, indie and art-pop, with an emphasis on melody, lyric and atmosphere. Her songs often begin with small things—a remembered conversation, changing weather, a private joke, a moment of affection—and follow them wherever they lead.

Love, loss, memory, tenderness and resilience recur throughout the catalogue, but Rowanwood is not an entirely solemn place. Humour, playfulness and the texture of ordinary life sit comfortably beside darker reflections, spiritual questions and songs concerned with memory, consequence and the things people leave behind.

At the centre is the song itself. Arrangements may be spare or expansive, acoustic or electric, intimate or full-band, but the words and melody remain the point rather than decoration around them.

Lovibond records with the Pangs of Conscious: Hannah Blyth on keyboards and synths, Eliza Fairhaven on lead electric guitar, Freja Lindström on bass, and Heidi Köhler on drums and percussion. Their presence allows the music to broaden beyond singer-songwriter convention without losing its intimacy. Harmony, texture and rhythm serve the character of each song rather than forcing the catalogue toward a single fixed sound.

Across the first three albums, that musical world has gradually widened. Mind How You Go introduced much of the warmth, affection, whimsy and reflection that would become familiar territory. When the Apple Blossoms are in Bloom turned more deliberately toward passing time, memory and the small moments that acquire weight only after they are gone. AJAR opens the door farther, allowing uncertainty, darker material and spiritual questions to stand alongside the intimacy and humour of the earlier work.

Rowanwood Music is the independent music house created by Erik F. Kreis to gather and present Lovibond’s songs, lyrics, artwork and written material. The website is intended not simply as a catalogue of releases, but as a home for the larger body of work surrounding the music.

AJAR

AJAR gathers twelve songs whose subjects and moods range widely while remaining part of the same emotional landscape.

“What Is This?” and “Don’t Ask Me” approach uncertainty from very different directions; “Things Left Unsaid” turns toward the weight of silence and what remains unresolved; “Hail Mary” brings spiritual language into a catalogue increasingly willing to ask questions for which there may be no tidy answer.

The album moves between intimacy, doubt, affection, humour and darker reflection without insisting that those things be separated from one another.

The AJAR album page brings together the artwork, individual song pages, lyrics and listening links.

When the Apple Blossoms are in Bloom

When the Apple Blossoms are in Bloom is particularly attentive to time: the way moments pass, the way memory alters them, and the strange importance ordinary experiences can acquire in retrospect.

“This Moment,” “Rain Dance,” “In the Tea Leaves” and “Rise and Shine” show different sides of that world, from contemplation to playfulness. Throughout the album, weather, seasons and everyday detail are allowed to carry emotional weight without being made grander than they need to be.

The album page provides access to the individual songs, lyrics, artwork and listening services.

Mind How You Go

Mind How You Go is Lovibond’s first album and the beginning of the Rowanwood catalogue.

Songs such as “Another Day to Play with You in the Sun,” “You’re My Cup of Tea” and “Dear Little Buttercup (You Are Decidedly Sweet)” reveal the affectionate and occasionally eccentric side of the writing, while the album as a whole establishes themes that continue through the later work: intimacy, memory, tenderness, longing and an interest in the significance of seemingly insignificant things.

There is a looseness and warmth to the record that remains important even as the later music ventures into more complicated territory.

The songs and the words

Lyrics are an important part of Rowanwood Music and are presented as part of the work rather than as an afterthought to the recordings.

Individual song pages allow listeners to spend time with the words independently of the music, while album pages preserve the relationship between each song and the larger collection in which it appears.

The catalogue ranges from direct and conversational writing to storytelling, reflection, humour and more deliberately poetic material. Some songs stay close to a single moment. Others wander through memory, folklore, faith or the peculiar business of trying to understand another person—or oneself.

There is no requirement that every song reach the same conclusion.
Sometimes the question is the song.
